Course Content

This course is aimed at MSK Physiotherapists who want to expand their skills to consider the Pelvic Floor, and Pelvic Health Physiotherapists who want to upskill in their practical assessment and treatment skills. 

 

The aim of the course is to explore the current evidence supporting the connection between Pelvic Floor Function and Dysfunction and the role the Pelvic Floor plays in sport and activity in both males and females. 

 

The course will look at: 

 

  1. The Complexity of the hip and pelvis and pelvic pain: How it sits in the paradigm of complexity theory and how this can be useful in clinical reasoning; 

  2. Review of regional hip and pelvic anatomy; 

  3. The connection between the Lumbar spine & Sacroiliac Joints (SIJ)’ contribution to an athletes’ pelvic pain; 

  4. The hip, groin and pelvic floor: how these areas are connected and how they may play a role in Athletic Pelvic Pain;

  5. Exploring tests you can perform to differentiate SIJ & Lumbar Spine involvement in pelvic pain; 

  6. Evidence based Differential Diagnosis of common hip & groin conditions  including: Osteoarthritis; Femoral Acetabular Impingement; Labral Tears; Greater Trochanteric Hip pain; Adductor related Groin pain; Iliopsoas Related Groin Pain; Inguinal Related Hip Pain; Pubic Related Groin Pain; 

  7. Manual therapy techniques for soft tissue and articular presentations in the Lumbar Spine / Pelvis Hip and groin; 

  8. How to develop exercise prescriptions for the above conditions;  

  9. Review of the PFM and their connection to the nerves of the Pelvis; 

  10. Overview of IASP Pain Definition and its specific relationship to Neuropathic Pain; 

  11. A discussion around the most recent advances in the science of peripheral neuropathy;

  12. Discussion and Assessment (external) of  Pelvic Neurology including: Pudendal Nerve; Anal Branch; Perineal / Vaginal Branch; Penile / Clitoral Branch; Obturator Nerve; Cluneal Nerves; Genitofemoral Nerve; Ilioinguinal Nerve;

  13. How to assess the neural sensitivity and mobility in Pelvic Nerves (PN)

  14. The science underpinning the use of manual therapy and exercise to address PN;

  15. Practical skills in the treatment of Pelvic PN;

  16. How to plan an active treatment programme to  address Pelvic Peripheral  Neuropathies;

  17. Red Flags in Pelvic Neurology / Cauda Equina / Scan-negative Cauda Equina.

The course will also include PRACTICAL LABS aimed at assessment and treatment of the following areas/conditions:

 

1.   Lumbar Spine / Sacro-Iliac Joint 

2.   Osteoarthritis 

3.   Femoral Acetabular Impingement 

4.   Labral Tears 

5.   Greater Trochanteric Hip pain 

6.   Adductor related Groin pain 

7.   Iliopsoas Related Groin Pain 

8.   Inguinal Related Hip Pain 

9.   Pubic Related Groin Pain 

10. Practical treatment of Pelvic peripheral Neuropathies 

 

The practical labs will help consolidate the clinical reasoning with the taught practical skills.

 

The course will have an evidence informed theoretical basis as well as practical assessment and clinical reasoning component and will consist of lectures and practical labs where interaction will be encouraged.

 

Where there is current evidence to support concepts taught it will be referenced and when there is no direct evidence it will be sought in parallel fields. 

 

There be a will focus on both male and female athletes.

Bill Taylor

Bill Taylor has been a Physiotherapist for nearly 40 years, with over 25 years specialising in pelvic dysfunction. Recognised internationally as a leading expert, he is one of the few UK specialists in male pelvic floor dysfunction.

A graduate of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapy, Bill has dedicated his career to treating musculoskeletal conditions through manual therapy and exercise. He has a particular focus on chronic pelvic floor pain and has contributed chapters to Chronic Pelvic Pain and Dysfunction and Neuro-Musculoskeletal Assessment.

He has taught extensively across the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, and Israel on male and female pelvic health. As one of the few UK physiotherapists working full-time in this field, he is the Clinical Director of his own Edinburgh clinic. He has worked with Scottish Ballet and Scottish Dance Theatre for over 20 years, playing a key role in establishing a full-time physiotherapy service for the National Ballet. He continues to treat dancers of all levels.

Bill is a visiting lecturer at The University of Edinburgh, teaching the Preventative Dance Injury module in the MSc Dance Science and Education programme. He has also lectured at Edinburgh Napier University and recently joined the visiting faculties at Brunel and Keele Universities. With over 25 years of experience mentoring students and supervising thesis projects, he remains committed to education.

Passionate about advancing pelvic health physiotherapy, Bill serves as a Trustee on the Pelvic Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POPG) Board of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and is a board member of the charity Prostate Scotland.
